Healthcare Providers

China is facing acute healthcare delivery challenges as more of its population begins to suffer from non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. This, along with a growing wealthy class, has propelled an increasing number of Chinese patients to travel to the U.S., Europe and Asia for medical treatments in oncology, cardiology, pediatrics and organ transplants, among many other procedure specialties. There is also a strong interest in comprehensive medical check-ups and wellness services.

HealthcareProviders

According to a recent report by Hurun and ILTM Asia, 66 percent of China’s 1.18 million wealthy millionaires would consider medical tourism.

In 2014, a U.S. venture capital firm invested over $8 million dollars in Saint Lucia Consulting Ltd, a Chinese company – and MTA member, specializing in sending Chinese patients to top tier hospitals in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

As more Chinese patients turn to medical tourism, it is critical that international healthcare providers understand the particular needs of the China patient market and provide the necessary healthcare and concierge services they require. This is especially important considering the cultural and language challenges that are inherent to this market. There is also a need to focus on creating a sustainable global brand and leverage relationships with patient referral sources such as medical tourism facilitators, physician groups and hospitals to increase international patient volume.
